13 Permanently Closed Disney World Rides That Fans Are Still Upset About

These are some of the permanently closed Disney World rides that fans are still upset about. Some of these closures are recent, while others are from a long time ago.

Horizons

Horizons was open from October 1, 1983 to January 9, 1999. It was a dark attraction about future technologies in EPCOT in Disney World.

The Great Movie Ride

The Great Movie Ride was located in Hollywood Studios from 1989 to 2017 when it permanently closed. The building was converted into a new ride called Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway which opened in 2020.

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was in Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom park. It opened October 1, 1971 and closed for good on September 7, 1998. Fans really miss this ride being at both Disney World and Disneyland.

Muppet*Vision 3D

Muppet*Vision 3D was a ride in Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios park. This ride was open from 1991 to June 7, 2025. Muppets fan are really sad that this ride closed. The whole area closed to make room for a new Monsters, Inc. land.

Liberty Square Riverboat

Liberty Square Riverboat was in Magic Kingdom and sailed on the closed Rivers of America. It opened on October 2, 1971 and permanently closed on July 7, 2025.

Tom Sawyer Island

Tom Sawyer Island opened on May 20, 1973 and permanently closed on July 7, 2025. The whole Rivers of America area closed to make room for a new Cars land called Piston Peak. Read more about the new Disney rides coming here.

Maelstrom

Maelstrom was a classic water ride in the Norway Pavilion in EPCOT. It was there from July 5, 1988 to October 5, 2014. It was closed and changed to be Frozen Ever After which opened on June 21, 2016 and is still open now.

Journey Into Imagination

Journey Into Imagination was an EPCOT attraction that closed and was changed to be Journey Into Imagination With Figment. The original Journey Into Imagination ride was there from 1983 to 1998.

The Studio Backlot Tour

Studio Backlot Tour is a closed attraction that was in Hollywood Studios park. It opened in 1989 and closed in 2014. The area where it used to be is now Toy Story Land.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Submarine Voyage

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Submarine Voyage was an attraction in Magic Kingdom that was open from 1971 to 1994. The ride was very popular, but closed due to high operating costs and needing a lot of maintenance.

Dinosaur

Dinosaur in Animal Kingdom has not actually closed yet, but its closure has been announced. It will permanently close in early 2026 when the rest of DinoLand USA closes. Read more about the upcoming closures here.

The Skyway

The Skyway was a gondola style attraction located in Magic Kingdom. It took guests between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. This attraction was open from 1971 to 1999.

Captain EO

Captain EO was a Michael Jackson short film attraction located in EPCOT. It was open from 1986 to 1998, then again from 2010 to 2015.
