Walt Disney World in Florida has changed a lot over the decades since it first opened in 1971. It has added many things and a lot of new rides have come to replace old ones. These are the Disney World rides that have been rethemed.
Frozen Ever After
Frozen Ever After is an attraction in EPCOT that replaced Maelstrom, which was a boat ride that took you through Norwegian culture. Maelstrom opened in July of 1988 and closed in October of 2014. Frozen Ever After then opened June 21, 2016.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is an attraction in Hollywood Studios. It replaced The Great Movie Ride. The Great Movie Ride was open from May 1989 to August 2017. After it closed it turned into Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and reopened on March 4, 2020. The Great Movie Ride took you through the history of cinema and Runaway Railway is about Mickey Mouse and his friends.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
Splash Mountain in Magic Kingdom was replaced by Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Splash Mountain was about Br’er Rabbit and Tiana’s is about The Princess and the Frog. Splash Mountain opened in October of 1992 and closed in January of 2023. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened on June 28, 2024
The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh
Magic Kingdom used to have the ride Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride just like Disneyland in California does. It closed on September 7, 1998 and the building for the ride was redone to be The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh. That ride opened on June 4, 1999.
Test Track
Test Track used to be an attraction called World of Motion. It was open in EPCOT from 1982 to 1996. It took you through the history of transportation. Test Track opened in 1999 and is a ride where your vehicle goes through different tests, including a high speed test. It’s the fastest ride at Disney World with a top speed of 65 mph. The Seas With Nemo & Friends
The Seas With Nemo and Friends used to be called The Living Seas. It was open from 1986 to 2005. It didn’t have a Disney or Pixar theme, it was just about Marine Life. After it closed it came back in 2006 with a Finding Nemo theme.
Star Tours
Star Tours is a Star Wars themed ride in Hollywood Studios park. Before that it was Adventure Thru Inner Space which was a ride that shrunk you down.
Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros
Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros used to be a very similar attraction called El Rio del Tiempo. They are both boat ride attractions. El Rio del Tiempo was open in EPCOT from 1982 to 2007 and closed for just a few months for Gran Fiesta Tour to open in 2007. Animatronics and screens were added to the ride.
Cosmic Rewind
Cosmic Rewind took up the space in EPCOT that used to occupy Universe of Energy – Ellen’s Energy Adventure. It had Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye the Science Guy. It now has a Guardians of the Galaxy theme. Ellen’s Energy Adventure opened in 1996 and permanently closed in 2017. Cosmic Rewind opened in 2022 and is one of the newer Disney World rides. These are all of the newest rides at Disney World.
