If you’re heading to Walt Disney World soon and deciding what rides to go on, you might be wondering is Tower Of Terror scary?
I’ll answer that and tell you everything you need to know about the Hollywood Studios Tower Of Terror ride in this post!
This Disney World ride is one of my favorite Disney attractions! I love the theming, the spooky vibe, and the thrill of it. My husband Adam loves it too!
Thrill rides like this are really fun, but can also be too intense for some people, especially small kids.
The official name of the ride is Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror. It is based on the show The Twilight Zone.

I would say that yes, Tower Of Terror is scary. It is definitely one of the most scary Disney World rides.
It’s not as scary as rides at some other theme parks, but for a Disney park it is on the scarier side.
The things that make this thrill ride scary are the darkness, the drops, the speed, the enclosed space, and the paranormal feel it has.

Where Is Tower Of Terror Located?
It’s located in Sunset Boulevard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park.
Hollywood Studios is one of the four theme parks at Disney World. The other three are Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom.
The same ride used to be in Disney California Adventure Park at the Disneyland Resort, but it was changed to Guardians Of The Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! which opened in May 2017.
You can still find the same Tower Of Terror ride at Walt Disney Studios in Disneyland Paris and Tokyo DisneySea though.

The Tower Of Terror Experience
While waiting in line you’ll head into the Hollywood Tower Hotel’s lobby. It’s full of spiderwebs and spooky things.
Guests walk through a few different rooms before boarding their elevator of the drop tower.
A cast member will tell you where to go on the automated guide vehicle and send you on your way.
The narrator, Rod Serling, will tell you the spooky story of five hotel guests who checked in, but never checked out.
The elevator you’re in takes you up to the top of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, then you drop 13 stories down!
The ride vehicle shoots up and down a few times and will stop at the top for a few seconds so you can look out and see a view of the Hollywood Studios park.
The Ride Vehicle
The ride vehicle is an elevator. There are 20 seats in the elevator with an aisle in the middle.
The elevator closes up, just like a real one. If you have claustrophobia, this may be a concern to you.
Safety
If you’re wondering is Tower Of Terror Safe, the answer depends on if you’re following their guidelines.
You must be at least 40″ tall to ride safely and should not have any health concerns with blood pressure, you neck, or back.
Tower Of Terror FAQ
The top speed on Tower Of Terror is 39 mph. It’s fast! It uses cables that pull you down and push you up at a super fast speed rather than your ride vehicle just falling.
I think this ride is too scary for young kids, including 5 year olds. They will most likely be scared of the darkness, the drops, and the scary storyline this ride has. Most kids probably need to be 6 years old or more to enjoy this ride.
There is not one set answer to this. The ride has 4 different drop profiles that it follows. Each one has a different number of drops and a different sequence. Some have more short drops than others and some have more long drops. Because of the different drop profiles, there is also not a straight answer if you’re wondering how long does the Tower Of Terror drop last.
The move is not super scary overall, but there are elements of suspense and spookiness that would be scary for kids.
Conclusion
I find Tower Of Terror to be a scary attraction, but it is also super fun and thrilling. If you’re up for it, take a ride on it and see for yourself!
