There’s a rumor going around that there is a Disney hug rule at the Disney parks. You might be wondering if it’s real or not.
In this post we’ll tell you what exactly the hug rule is and if it’s a real rule the cast members have to follow or not.
What Is The Disney Hug Rule?
If you follow Disney accounts on Instagram or TikTok, then you’ve most likely seen reels or videos about the Disney hug rule. It’s a hot topic right now!
The hug rule is that a character cannot let go from a hug until the child or guest lets go. The child is the first one to pull away from the hug, then the character can too.
There are videos of kids hugging characters for minutes at a time and it’s so sweet!

Is The Disney Hug Rule Real?
The hug rule is not an official Disney rule, it is considered to be an unofficial Disney rule. There are many characters that will follow this, but do not expect them all to and don’t be upset if you encounter a character who does not follow it.
It all started because of a quote from Walt Disney. He said “You never know how much that child may need that hug”. I think we can all relate, I mean who doesn’t love a good hug from Mickey Mouse or their favorite character?
A character hugging a child for as long as the child wants is the exact type of Disney magic we’re all looking for when we go to Disneyland and Disney World!
We hope that most of the cast members will continue to follow this unofficial rule and keep making people’s days.
Adults, please don’t test this on characters and not let go for a very long time just to see what happens. That can make the lines to meet characters very long. Leave the long hugs to the kids who need them.
