Disneyland and California Adventure have seen many changes since their opening days, with the additions of new attractions, rides being rethemed, and some closing forever. These are some of the Disneyland rides that permanently closed. They are really fun to learn about.
Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain opened in Disneyland in 1989. It was a log flume ride that many people loved. It was closed in January 2023 and reopened in November 2024 as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
PeopleMover

The Disneyland PeopleMover opened in 1967 and was closed in 1995. You can still see the tracks from the ride above you when you walk around Tomorrowland. Disney World still has a PeopleMover in Magic Kingdom.
Tomorrowland Boats

The Tomorrowland Boats were later changed to Phantom Boats. It was a very short-lived attraction that was only open from July 1955 to January 1956. This was a little boat ride around the lagoon of Tomorrowland. This area is now where the attraction Finding Nemo Submarine Boats is.
Rocket Rods

Rocket Rods was a Tomorrowland attraction that used the same track as the PeopleMover. It was open from May 1998 to April 2001. This ride was not open for very long.
Flying Saucers

The Flying Saucers ride was located in Tomorrowland in Disneyland. It operated from August 6, 1961 to September 5, 1966. One person could sit on each ride vehicle, which was a flying saucer. This ride had a lot of problems. Not very many guests could ride it at a time, it was expensive to run, and it needed a lot of maintenance.
Jolly Trolley

Jolly Trolley was a trolley located in Toontown. It operated from January 1993 to December 2003. The attraction was hard to operate since it was in the way for people to walk around Toontown and only a couple of people could ride it at a time.
Skyway

The Skyway operated from 1956 to 1994. It took you from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland or from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland. You can find the old steps from the Fantasyland loading station still in Fantasyland by the fruit cart and the exit of Casey Jr. Circus Train.
Motor Boat Cruise

Motor Boat Cruise was an attraction where you steer a boat that’s on a hidden track. It was open from 1957 to 1991. The water from it is still in Fantasyland between it’s a small world and the seating area behind Edelweiss Snacks.
Rainbow Caverns Mine Train

Rainbow Caverns Mine Train also known as Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland was open from July 1956 to January 1977. It was later replaced by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad which opened in 1979.
Superstar Limo

Superstar Limo was an attraction in California Adventure park that did not last long. It only operated from February 2001 to January 2002, not even lasting an entire year. It was replaced by Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue, which opened in 2006 and is still there today.
Tower of Terror

Tower of Terror was an attraction in California Adventure that had a pretty good run from 2004 to 2017. You can still find this same attraction in Hollywood Studios in Disney World. Tower or Terror in California was replaced by Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! It opened in 2017 as part of Avengers Campus.
California Screamin’

California Screamin’ was a roller coaster in California Adventure park. It opened in 2001 when the theme park opened. It closed June 7, 2018 and reopened on June 22, 2018 as Incredicoaster. It’s basically the same ride, but now has theming from The Incredibles movie.
Maliboomer

Maliboomer opened in February of 2001 and later closed in September of 2010. It was in Paradise Pier, which is now Pixar Pier. The ride was located where Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind now is. It would shoot you way up high, then you’d drop down.
Luigi’s Flying Tires

Luigi’s Flying Tires opened June 15, 2012 when Cars Land opened. It was very similar to the Flying Saucers ride that Disneyland had many decades earlier. It closed February 17, 2015 and went through some changes. The area reopened March 7, 2016 as a new attraction called Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, which is still there now and much cuter.
Red Car Trolley

The Red Car Trolley was in California Adventure from 2012 to 2020, was closed for a bit then reopened in 2022. It then closed permanently in February 2025 to make room for an Avengers Campus expansion. You can see more about the expansion and new rides coming here.
It’s Tough To Be A Bug

It’s Tough To Be A Bug was an attraction in A Bug’s Land in California Adventure park. It was open from 2002 to 2018. A Bug’s Land had a lot of attractions and all of them were closed when this whole land closed in 2018. This area was then turned into Avengers Campus, which opened in 2021.
Flik’s Flyers

Flik’s Flyer’s was an attraction in A Bug’s Land. The ride was in operation from 2002 to 2018. It was then repurposed into Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind and moved to where the Maliboomer ride was, over by Incredicoaster and Pixar Pal-A-Round on Pixar Pier.
Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train

Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train was a slow-moving train attraction in A Bug’s Land. It was there from 2002 to 2018. It was a nice leisurely ride that was great for people of all ages.
Francis’ Ladybug Boogie

Francis’ Ladybug Boogie was another ride in A Bug’s Land that had to close when the whole land closed. It operated from 2002 to 2018. The ride vehicle was a cute ladybug and it was a spinning attraction.
Tuck and Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies

Tuck and Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies was A Bug’s Life themed bumper cars type of attraction. Like the other rides in A Bug’s Land, it opened in 2002 and closed in 2018.
Mulholland Madness

Mulholland Madness was a mousetrap style roller coaster that operated in California Adventure that opened February 8, 2001 and closed on October 12, 2010. It was later reopened on July 1, 2011 as Goofy’s Sky School, which is what the attraction still is now.
Orange Stinger

Orange Stinger was a swings ride on Paradise Pier (now Pixar Pier) in California Adventure park. It opened when the park did in 2001 and closed in July of 2009. It reopened almost a year later on June 11, 2010 as Silly Symphony Swings. The most notable difference in the attractions was that Disney took down the big orange peel that was around the attraction.
Sun Wheel

The Sun Wheel opened when California Adventure did on February 8, 2001. It was a ferris wheel with a big sun on it. In 2009 it was rethemed to Mickey’s Fun Wheel and the sun was replaced with a big Mickey. In 2018 it was changed to Pixar Pal-A-Round.
